Physical and emotional release after years of deeply held shock

Nicola has been practising and teaching shiatsu and qigong for more than 45 years. So when she came to me after a hip replacement, she understood energy within the body, qi and meridians at a very deep level. She didn’t need more knowledge: what she needed was space to work with what her own body was holding.

How she arrived to me

Nicola first came to me following a hip replacement. The surgery surfaced a lot of emotion beneath the surface.

Decades earlier she’d been in a serious accident, suffered from a deep loss and experienced a chronic illness in quick succession. As well as the recent hip pain, she was carrying the imprint and shock of these traumas on her body.

My job was to work with the whole picture rather than treating any one symptom in isolation.

How we worked together

Nicola approached both me and a therapist to guide her surgery recovery - two strands that complemented one another. During her initial sessions we talked about what had come up in therapy and how that experience was landing in her body, then used the shiatsu to work with what was physically present.

I began by working with Nicola's hips and legs, looking at the flow through the meridians and helping to create movement where things had become stuck. The small intestine line in her leg was particularly prominent, with patterns connected to the shock held from her accident. I also worked with her lungs. The lungs were physically affected, but they were also connected to a much deeper layer of grief. I helped move some of what had been held for so long.

The physical work was accompanied by dialogue. We explored beliefs, hurt and anger, and began to create new pathways rather than continuing to follow the same patterns. Because Nicola understands qi and the meridians herself, we were able to work at a very deep level.

Overtime the shock and emotion began to settle. Nicola described the experience as clearing out the dark corners of a cupboard.

What changed for her

Nicola found a greater sense of softness and acceptance within herself, alongside a stronger sense of self. She worked through the shock and grief within her body at a very deep level. There were physical changes too: she became stronger, more mobile and her lungs became stronger.

Nicola found her own experience of qi within her work deepened as a result, allowing her to have an even deeper impact within her own work. She also completed writing a book about that she'd been working on for years.

Nicola continues to come to me regularly and says that my shiatsu is the best she can get - which means a great deal coming from such an experienced practitioner herself.

In her words:

“I get regular Shiatsu with Tasha. I find it so beneficial for keeping me in charge of my own health. Talking with Tasha helps me see myself in perspective! The long-term benefits are extraordinary. And it is wonderful to have something to do that is good for us that is absolutely enjoyable. I look forward to my shiatsu as an oasis of contentment in my busy life.” - Nicola Ley, Shiatsu and Qigong teacher
